Battling through insecurity || The DUFF by Kody Keplinger

Title:The DUFF
Author:Kody Keplinger
Release Date:September 7th 2010
Publisher:Little Brown
Synopsis:
Seventeen-year-old Bianca Piper is cynical and loyal, and she doesn’t think she’s the prettiest of her friends by a long shot. She’s also way too smart to fall for the charms of man-slut and slimy school hottie Wesley Rush. In fact, Bianca hates him. And when he nicknames her “the Duff,” she throws her Coke in his face.

But things aren’t so great at home right now, and Bianca is desperate for a distraction. She ends up kissing Wesley. Worse, she likes it. Eager for escape, Bianca throws herself into a closeted enemies-with-benefits relationship with him.

Until it all goes horribly awry. It turns out Wesley isn’t such a bad listener, and his life is pretty screwed up, too. Suddenly Bianca realizes with absolute horror that she’s falling for the guy she thought she hated more than anyone.

The DUFF is one of my all time favourite books. The amount of times I've reread this is actually quite crazy. But the amusing thing is that I never get tired of this book no matter how many times I've read it.
But I never was able to write a proper review for this book. But today after probably my 18th reread of this book,I am finally telling you all why everyone of you should read this book.

It has a fabulous MC

Bianca Piper is unlike any other female lead you'll come across in a book. She's cynical, sassy, snarky, strong and not at all whiny.I deeply admire her both as a fictional character and as a person. She isn't afraid to face her demons, fears and problems.
I can even say that she is one of my favourite heroines ever.

Aside from Bianca all the other characters are great as well.

The DUFF is full of relatable and wonderful characters.Bianca's friends,Casey-a strong no nonsense girl,Jessica-a sweet and cute friend,Toby-Bianca's crush who is an adorable geek.
Bianca's parents were also great characters. Her mother, who's often absent, but still so affectionate of her daughter, and her father who was struggling with his alcoholism.

And the one I saved for last.Wesley Rush. Our hero.

“Wesley Rush was the most disgusting womanizing playboy to ever darken the doorstep of Hamilton High… but he was kind of hot. Maybe if you could put him on mute… and cut off his hands… maybe—just maybe—he’d be tolerable then. Otherwise, he was a real piece of shit. Horn dog shit.”

Wesley is a hot, arrogant, rich playboy with a huge soft side and wonderful heart. He is introduced as an asshole, whom Bianca hates. But as we learn more about him,we learn how lonely, hurt and insecure he is inside all that arrogant exterior.

It's impossible not to fall for this guy.

The romance is soooo hot

These two fight more than they talk. But if you have followed enough YA books, you know that they are bound to fall in love.I loved every moment of their bickering, their banters and fights.Bianca and Wesley insult each other as much as they can.
And the fangirl inside me just smile at them and think "God they're so cute":)

“I don't like him," I explained. "He annoys the hell out of me ninety-six percent of the time, and sometimes I'd like nothing better than to strangle him to death. But at the same time I... I want him to be happy. I think about him way more than I should, and I -"
"You love him.”

But that's just when they talk. When they don't-they fall in bed.Often.Their romance may be slow and gradual, but their passion is not.Wesley and Bianca doesn't waste any time with sweet gestures or dates. They kiss, have sex, fight and then fall in love with each other. In that order.
And throughout the novel, the moments they have are hot, burning with tension and chemistry.
And I just go...

And they fall in love.Bianca denies. Unsurprisingly Wesley doesn't.And the chase begins.

"Wesley Rush doesn’t chase girls, but I’m chasing you"

The story is totally relatable.

I love the realistic take on the life of a teenager in this book.Maybe because Kody Keplinger was a teenager herself when she wrote The DUFF-but nevertheless, the book perfectly captures a teenage girl's life.Highschool dramas, insecurities, disfunctional families, friendships, fitting in,cliques, reputation and teen sex. Each and every drama of a teenager is described beautifully in this book.

It talks about insecurity.

Insecurity is the main concept of the whole book. It's a demon that not only Bianca but also every other teenage girl faces in life.It can eat you from inside, and it is impossible to fight with.

But in this book,I learned something beautiful.Whenever you feel insecure, also remember that each girl is insecure about something.Everyone of us think that we are not beautiful enough, talented enough or successful enough. That we are not alone in the world. And in the end, there's no need that anyone should feel insecure.

“I was the Duff. And that was a good thing. Because anyone who didn't feel like the Duff must not have friends. Every girl feels unattractive sometimes. Why had it taken me so long to figure that out? Why had I been stressing over that dumb word for so long when it was so simple? I should be proud to be the Duff. Proud to have great friends who, in their minds, were my Duffs.”

And I also learnt that no one deserves to be treated as an inferior. No one should be judged, condemned or called names.

“Calling Vikki a slut or a whore was just like calling somebody the Duff. It was insulting and hurtful, and it was one of those titles that just fed off the inner fear every girl must have from time to time. Slut, bitch, prude, tease, ditz. They were all the same. Every girl felt like one of these sexist labels described her at some point.”

The book teaches us to face our problems.

When things turn chaotic,go out of hand and when we are struggling with problems,we should face them directly. This is something I learned through The DUFF as well.We easily turn towards distractions in times of trouble. But that's not the way.
When Bianca's parents are dealing with a divorce, her mother starts to go on trips, her father turns towards his whiskey bottle and Bianca uses sex as a remedy.
But in the end,nothing works.
The truth is that troubles should be faced, not avoided.

“No matter where you go or what you do to distract yourself, reality catches up with you eventually.”
It has a movie coming out!

The movie based on the book is coming out this year,on the 20th of February. After seeing the trailer,I am not sure whether it actually follows the story line accurately, all the more reason why you all should definitely try out the book, before going to the theater.

So there are you,my list of reasons why you guys must go for this amazing book!
