I never understood why every review for this book I saw around the blogosphere was so vague. In fact I was quite annoyed after reading all of them.I hate going into a book blind, without any background information, but still curiosity won and I finally went for this book. And boy, only after finishing this book did I understand all those reviews.
To tell you a bit of a back story,Cadence, our main character comes from a rich family called the Sinclairs. They are rich enough to own a whole island and just like any rich family in the world, they have their demons and dirty little secrets. From this family comes the liars-three cousins and a friend-with whom we travel along the story.
"Me,Johnny,Mirren and Gat.Gat,Mirren,Johnny and me. The family calls us four the liars"
One of the best things about the book is its writing style.I love these type of original, unique and different styles of writing in books. It's not for everybody-I have to admit that, because I know that some might find it difficult to get used to but I was utterly captivated by the narrative of the story.
"Welcome to the beautiful Sinclair family.
No one is a criminal
No one is an addict
No one is a failure"
Next is the mystery.I am not a huge fan of mysteries, but I do like to try out a few here and there.I love how unpredictable the twist and the revelation was and how we are shown little glimpses of the mystery here and there throughout the whole story.
I also like the characters. The four liars were typical teenagers. They were flawed ,sometimes unlikable, relatable, and most of all believable. It was a fresh experience-reading about teens who had a lot of weak qualities ,portrayed as characters who act like any normal teenager would do-especially Cadence, who was so flawed and weak unlike any other MC I've read about.
I am not going to college next year;I've given up all the sports I used to do and clubs I used to be part of;I'm high on Percocet half of the time and I'm not even nice to my little cousins.
Overall,I think anyone who likes a taste of unique and different writing, unpredictable mysteries or realistic characters will love this book. It's a quick read, guaranteed to take you out of any reading slump and an unforgettable and mind blowing book.
