The Art of Twitter - Nori @ ReadWriteLove28 || LITHW16

Hi bookworms!

Social media has become a vital platform to promote blog posts and build relationships, when it comes to blogging. Probably the most prominent one of them all would be twitter, with its popularity among users and the awesome experience and opportunities it delivers. For a starter, learning the art of twitter might be tricky, so today we have Nori to tell you all about it! When I thought about this post idea, Nori was the first person to pop into my head, as she's the ever present soul on twitter and often known as the head blogger cheerleader! Without further ado, let me present the floor to the expert!

Hi everyone! My name is Nori and I’m the blogger at ReadWriteLove28.com. I’m so excited to be here today to talk about one of my favorite things ever- Twitter!!! I will admit- Twitter can be a bit overwhelming, and trying to fit all of my tips into one post might be a bit tough, but I’ll do my best to make it worth reading ;)

So What Should I Tweet About?

That’s completely up to you!

A good rule of thumb is that 80% of your tweets should be interacting with fellow community members and 20% can be about promoting your blog. Personally, my tweets are probably 99% interaction and 1% promotion, but that’s simply because I’m obsessed with Twitter and love chatting with people!

Interactions are extremely important and I always look to see who people talk to on Twitter! If I just see links to blog posts, I’m not very likely to follow you.

I love starting conversations on Twitter. Wow, that was a vague sentence. What I mean is, I love asking questions on Twitter and reading the responses from people! A perfect example is sending out something like: “Hey! What are you currently reading?” It seems so simple, but it’s super helpful! Plus, I often find out about new books, and my TBR grows and grows and grows… ;)

Following People

There are two major philosophies when it comes to following people on Twitter.

1. Follow 4 Follow
1. This means that whenever someone follows you, you follow them back. Personally, this method is very overwhelming for me, but I do know people who do it and are happy!
2. Selective Following
1. I don’t randomly follow people; I always try to do my research! After all, I want to make sure that my feed is curated and specific to topics that I’m interested in. So, if you look at the people I follow, it’s mostly book bloggers, authors, readers, and people in the publishing industry.
2. I have a personal Twitter account for real life stuff, and I try my best to never mix up the accounts. My book life is separate from my real life, so there’s no need for me to confuse myself by following IRL friends and book friends on the same account!

Personally, I tend to only follow people that I’ve talked to for awhile, and/or book friends that I’ve met in real life. I also try to follow authors whose books I’ve read and enjoyed, or have upcoming releases that I’m looking forward to reading. There are some people who I follow that I’m not close to, but are great sources of information about the industry and/or certain topics.

What Should I Do If I’m Shy?

Don’t panic! It’s okay- honestly, a lot of us bookworms are shy and introverted in nature. (Of course not everyone, but definitely a lot of us) With that being said, it’s normal to feel a bit out of place at first. But, the important thing is to keep chatting. You will find a group of friends on Twitter, and you’ll definitely get more and more comfortable with the platform.

If you’re new and prefer to have people say hello to you, let me know! I’m always happy to signal boost new people on Twitter and introduce them to my friends and followers. Also, if you ever have a question about Twitter or blogging in general, feel free to DM me! My DMs are always open.

My last piece of advice- never be afraid to say hello! The book community is pretty friendly, and I know that I always like to make new friends. Twitter is an amazing place, and it’s definitely worth using!
