Guess who's back from the college cave???? Entering twitter after a semester of sporadic tweeting makes me feel so outdated, but hey, I am so happy to be back! There is also so many college stories and updates to tell! Hang in there while I recap all my amazing adventures from the last four months and my first semester at the University of Iowa
I ended up loving University of Iowa and Iowa City much more than I expected to. It's still very white, and full of problematic people, but for the most part, I love the atmosphere and the people I have met. I have become quite the social butterfly, I have made so many friends, and my roommate is still puzzled how I know everyone :D
I saw snow for the first time. It was beautiful and cold and amazing. Can we please have snow without the cold? I was dead terrified of winter when I moved in, and while I have to bundle up to the teeth - and double up my pants and socks - before I take even a small step out of the building, I guess it hasn't been that bad. Unless you count my skin getting perpetually dry and cracking at times. Sigh. I am even more scared to go back after break, from near the equator to straight to the middle of winter.
You need to see my reaction videos when I first saw snow

Classes were definitely the best part of college. I ended up adding a major a few weeks into classes, so I am officially double majoring in English and Creative Writing and Cinema. College has increased my aspirations for screenwriting, and I am so excited to explore the field and see what it has in store for me. I genuinely enjoyed going to class and participating in discussions, and all my professors love me :D My Rhetoric professor and I send each other Brooklyn 99 gifs in our emails, and my Cinema TA is like my new bestfriend. I go to his office hours every week and we just sit there and talk about all kinds of nonsense for an hour. I am ambitious and nerdy as always, and officially have a 4.0 GPA for my first semester. GO ME! :D
I was always super involved in school and I was able to recreate that in college too! I joined the South Asian Student Alliance and is currently the Research and Development director for the org. I am part of a college magazine and volunteer for the international admissions office, but my best experiences have come from the Campus Activities Board. CAB has been amazing, and I have made tons of new friends, and was elected as the director of the cultural committee for the next year. Creating an inclusive environment to underrepresented minorities and adding diversity to a very white campus is going to be a challenge, but it's something I am looking forward to and excited about.
Not everything has been the best though. I feel like Iowa City has introduced me to some of the most problematic people I have ever met in my life, and keeping my mouth shut has become super hard at times. I am slowly learning to pick my battles so I don't exhaust myself in a few months, but sometimes people seriously make me lose my faith in humanity. Also straight white men should be cancelled. I come from a South Asian country and am super used to the regular catcalls and leers, but I am still surprised by how forward some people can be. I still haven't got used to it, nor have I figured out how to handle certain situations, but I am trying. I was officially done with men when a grown ass middle aged man started hitting on me one day. *shudders*
However, I have successfully conquered my first semester, made awesome friends and have had a whole lots of fun! I am so excited for the next semester, but for now, I am enjoying break, my mom's food, the warm weather and am looking forward to get to all the books and movies I have queued up! I am working on a blogging schedule so I can be on top of this side of my life while I am in college as well. First up, I am going to start with all my new shiny 2019 ARCs, commencing with The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi!
